Village Craft

Fish Trap

At Camp Bali we have a close relationship with the local Balinese.

Here a village elder is demonstrating some of the lost arts which have become redundant due to modern technologies. In these frames a fish trap is being made from young bamboo.

The selection and preparation of the bamboo is actually the labor intensive component. Once this is done the fish trap is quick to take shape.

The shy but happy craftsman poses with his product.

The newly made trap is demonstrated. This style of trap is not baited and relies on a small waterfall, whether man-made or natural, which then collects small fish and shrimp that are migrating downstream. In this frame for the sake of demonstration it is being implemented in a non traditional way by utilizing the over flow from a pond stocked with prawns, soon destined for an open grill. This is not typical of its original use!
